Discovery Health has introduced a new medical aid plan called Active Smart, which is a hybrid hospital plan that offers limited cover for out-of-hospital expenses, such as doctor visits, dentistry, and optometry, for a lower monthly premium.
This plan is aimed at young professionals who cannot afford traditional medical aid.
Key features of the Active Smart plan:
- Full cover for emergencies at any private hospital.
- Unlimited cover within the Dynamic Smart Hospital Network for planned procedures.
- Limited out-of-hospital benefits, including:
- SmartGP consultations (R125 co-payment per appointment).
- One dental check per member (R190 co-payment).
- One eye test per member (R125 co-payment).
- Over-the-counter medication (R535 limit per family).
- Acute medication and specialist visits through the Personal Health Fund.
This plan is designed to be more affordable for young professionals, with a premium of R1,350 per month per person, which is approximately 5.10% of the average salary for this age group.
Discovery Health’s research shows that young people prioritize benefits such as over-the-counter medication, mental health benefits, GP consultations, female health issues, dentistry, and optometry. They are also interested in fitness and nutrition and are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors.
The Active Smart plan encourages members to use network doctors and hospitals and manage their own health costs through the Personal Health Fund. This approach may be the future of medical aid at Discovery Health.
